Tell Syracuse University to punish students who commit hate crimes, not peaceful protestors

Below is the letter we will send on your behalf to the Chancellor's Office and Department of Public Safety at Syracuse.

I am writing to you as a member of Color Of Change, the nation's largest digital racial justice organization. I write to express my full support of the students of activist group #NotAgainSU, who are protesting hate crimes on Syracuse’s campus.

The student protestors of #NotAgainSU have written out a clear, reasonable list of changes that need to happen at Syracuse in order to make the campus a safe, comfortable environment for Black students, students of colors, Jewish students, and all students. These demands have been created to ensure campus is a safe, hate-free environment for Black students and all students. Because of students' urgent need for safety, it is imperative that you immediately respond to #NotAgainSU's demands and make moves to ensure their requests are implemented on campus.

Your lack of willingness to implement student demands is both disturbing and unacceptable. Your students are fighting to ensure their University is a safe place for them to live and learn. If you continue to be unresponsive to your students’ requests, you will irreparably damage not only their college experience, but cause them lifelong pain and trauma. Your students do not deserve to be experiencing such pain and trauma.

In support of the students of #NotAgainSU, and all students on campus impacted by the recent string of hate crimes, I demand that you institute all demands being requested by #NotAgainSU.

Tell Syracuse University to punish students who commit hate crimes, not peaceful protestors

Syracuse University has been suspending Black students for protesting, and blocking them from receiving food and feminine hygiene products. Yes, you read that correctly; instead of punishing the students on campus who are committing various racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic hate crimes, the University is suspending the students who are protesting against them. This is a gross mistreatment of students who are fighting for their right to be safe on campus.

Since November, student protestors have been trying to get the administration at Syracuse to take action against the hate crimes occurring on campus. In support of the students, more than 21,000 Color Of Change members signed a petition that brought attention to student protestors’ demands for accountability. The situation is so dire that the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, attempted to intervene, demanding accountability from Chancellor Kent Syverud. Despite these actions, the administration refuses to make changes to increase transparency around, and accountability for, hate crimes happening on campus.

Syracuse students are demanding changes that are long overdue, and the students need our help to get the administration to respond to their demands. Write to Syracuse University leadership and tell them to reinstate the students they’ve suspended, punish students who commit hate crimes, and institute student protestors’ demands for transparency and accountability.
