Ruchi leads Atmashakti Trust, an organization that impacts over a million families across 12,000 villages in Odisha, India. She graduated from SMT’s Digital Campaigning Certificate Program and has shared her work in SMT trainings. Under her guidance, the organization has supported thousands of villagers in winning rights, benefits, and justice in some of the poorest communities in the country, including funding for education, access to pensions and health. Village-based staff are supported by locally raised contributions, including modest rice contributions. A Twitter warrior network has achieved local victories by getting the attention of municipal officials when other approaches didn’t work, inspiring other organizers working in low-internet-access communities. It’s Dolores Huerta Day. Today Co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association, Dolores Huerta is one of the most influential labor activists of the 20th century and a leader of the Chicano civil rights movement. She led the United Farm Workers (UFW) grape boycott campaign and the first strike of 5,000 farmworkers that helped build the union and win farmworker rights. She was born on this day in 1930.  Dolores also came up with the UFW slogan "Sí se puede" which the Obama campaign translated into English for their "Yes We Can" rallying cry. In 1988 Dolores was severely beaten by San Francisco police during a peaceful protest that was responding to then vice-President George H.W. Bush's critical views of the UFW. She suffered broken ribs and the loss of her spleen. Dolores is still active and most recently has organized on women's rights issues and for immigration reform.
