Tell County Supervisors that the Goal of the New Climate and Energy Plan Must Be Fairfax to Zero by 2050

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved funding for two critical, new staff positions that will lead the creation of a Community-Wide Energy and Climate Action Plan! The plan will have goals and strategies to achieve meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas pollution.

This is a major accomplishment that Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions has worked on for years. And we applaud our leaders for taking this important step.

But what will be the goal of the plan?

There will be many competing voices, some of whom will try to prevent Fairfax County—Virginia’s largest jurisdiction—from becoming a leader against climate change.

Let’s not allow that to happen.

If you want Fairfax County to join Washington, DC, and Montgomery County, Maryland in a pledge to be carbon neutral by 2050—and stand with other jurisdictions around the nation and the world—sign this petition now.

We’ll present it to Fairfax County leaders. Sign on today.

Time is running out to protect everyone and all living things from the ravages of devastating climate change that scientists tell us are coming.

That’s the clear message from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate. The world’s scientists emphatically agree that carbon emissions must be slashed by 45% by 2030, and completely decarbonize by 2050.

I’m grateful for the responsible action taken by the members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to fund a new Community-Wide Energy and Climate Action Plan.

But now, I’m asking you to take the next step and pledge to make the goal of the plan to eliminate greenhouse gas pollution in Fairfax County by 2050.

Please join Washington, DC, Montgomery County, Maryland—and jurisdictions around the nation and the world—that have already made this pledge.

As a person of faith, I believe we are called upon to care for the most vulnerable among us. We know children, the elderly and lower-income populations will be most affected by climate change. We need you, a leader of Fairfax County, to act with urgency to aggressively protect the county’s people and ensure a livable community for the future.

That’s why I am asking you to make the goal of the new County climate and energy plan to be Fairfax to Zero by 2050.
