Fall 2019 Regional Forum on Nuclear Decommissioning
Date: Thursday, October 10, 2019 from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Purpose: To convey key information from reactor communities which have experience with decommissioning of nuclear power plants, and expert insight on nuclear waste management and decommissioning issues to key stakeholders, community members and decision-makers.
Sponsors: NYS Assemblywoman Sandy Galef, NYS Senator Peter Harckham, Westchester County County Legislator Catherine Borgia, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, and others.
Content: The program will feature a panel of representatives from other nuclear reactor communities, including Oyster Creek NJ; Pilgrim, MA; VT Yankee, Yankee Rowe, Maine Yankee; Three Mile Island, PA; Zion IL; and San Onofre, CA; a panel of scientists and other experts, and information on Decommissioning Specialists, to whom many nuclear power facilities are being transferred after closure.
These panels will provide sound, independent information for elected and appointed officials, NYS and Local Community Task Force and the Indian Point Nuclear Decommissioning Advisory Panel (NDCAP) members, interested community members, and the media. Currently their members are actively exploring options for economic development and ways to mitigate the loss of tax revenues and critical charitable donations that will occur when Indian Point closes in 2020 and 2021. Local, County, State and Federal officials face important questions about how to ensure that Indian Point’s spent (but still highly radioactive) fuel is secured, and how and when to deconstruct the facility so as to minimize risk of dispersing radioactivity. We hope to provide information that will lead to the best results for Indian Point, Oyster Creek, and other reactor communities across the nation, which are imminently facing nuclear plant closure and decommissioning.
