In the congressional political psyche, direct cash payments to Americans were unthinkable only a month ago. But at the end of March, the House passed a $2.2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, the CARES Act, that included language to make it a reality: $1,200 per adult. $500 per child.

But, as it turns out, not every child. The bill doesn’t provide any kind of payments to children over the age of 16 who are still claimed as dependents by their parents. Even if those children file their own taxes, if they are claimed as a dependent by a parent they will receive no stimulus payment, nor will their parents receive one on their behalf. The current language also excludes rebates for dependents with disabilities of any age.

That gap in the stimulus caught the attention of Rep. Angie Craig, Democrat of Minnesota’s Second District, and Democratic Sen. Tina Smith who have introduced the All Dependents Count Act, a bill that would expand the qualifying age of a dependent under the CARES Act to 19, 24 if you are a dependent and a student, and beyond 24 for individuals with disabilities.

Aiming for next stimulus package

Craig first noticed a problem when her 21-year-old son called her. “He was online checking to see what level of rebate his girlfriend’s parents would be able to get,” Craig said in a phone call with reporters. “And he called me and he asked, ‘Is this on purpose? What happened here?’”

On March 30th, Craig sent a letter to Rep. Richard Neal, Democrat of Massachusetts and chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, asking him to work with Republicans to broaden the definition of a qualifying child under the CARES Act.

“I have already heard from a number of college students who are surprised that neither they nor their parents will receive any benefit from our rescue plan,” Craig says in the letter. “Many of these students are now back home due to shuttered colleges around the country. The definition used in the Senate bill is too narrow and will deprive them of the rebate families were expecting to receive to help pay their bills and support their families.”

Craig wants the bill to be included in the next coronavirus stimulus package, due to be considered when Congress reconvenes in late April.

Craig’s bill is cosponsored by Rep. Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota’s Fifth District. In her own letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and IRS commissioner Charles Rettig, Omar asked whether the interpretation of the law that prevents adult dependents from receiving stimulus payments was correct, and if so, that the officials take immediate action to address the gap.

“If the statutory interpretation of complete ineligibility is confirmed to be the case, we hope you will expand eligibility in future negotiations,” she wrote. “In the meantime to clear up any more confusion, will there be a process for an individual who was an adult-dependent in 2018 or 2019 but is not an adult-dependent in 2020 to receive their $1,200 as an advanced payment?”

Beyond Omar, the bill has wide support among the Democratic caucus: the bill has 128 total cosponsors, including all Democrats in the Minnesota delegation, and four Republicans (none from Minnesota, though). In the Senate, the bill is cosponsored by a number of prominent Democrats, including Sens. Amy Klobuchar, Ron Wyden of Oregon, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Kamala Harris of California.

“As Minnesotans face an unprecedented health and economic crisis due to coronavirus, I’m committed to helping folks get assistance from the most recent bipartisan stimulus package,” Smith said in a statement.

“It’s deeply unfair to Minnesota families that no credit is available for dependents 17 and older, including older children with disabilities and college students. My legislative fix will right this wrong and — more importantly — offer some additional relief to families.”

  1. I cannot imagine the inanity of such thinking, to exclude children 16 or over, as well as the many whose income is so low, they don’t file taxes. Such is the inhumanity we see from repubs. History will remember these creatures as Deplorables.

    1. I can not believe it our senate and congress representatives did ignore it the children’s between the age of 17 to 23 aren’t religionless to get any help from the stimulus help… those children’s are 17-18 are in high school and not reliable to get as dependent help…. other group from the age of 18-23 are in the college and the parents are paying their college tuition fees and living with parents similar they are 100% dependent and expensive than under 19 years dependent child…… I would be requesting to all our senate representatives and congress representatives to get this issue under their consideration please

      1. 2018 my child was still in high school she was 16 turn 17 in Nov. more than 9 months at the age of 16 and yet I did not receive any money for her she is still a dependent. This is so wrong as a single parent without child support.

        1. I agree with you wholeheartedly Yolanda. My daughter is 20, works. pays her own rent, etc. I help her pay some expenses that she cannot afford and pay on her tuition. She pays for her car insurance and I struggle to pay the note.(I cannot afford to fix my own car, btw) I filed my daughter as a dependent, but did not qualify for earned income credit. So, why can’t my hard working, college student be a part of The “CARE Act”? Or, at least give me the $500 for “dependents”? I am single mother and a student furthering my education. I lost my job as a housekeeper over a month ago . This is a travesty and needs to be corrected immediately! I have to half the $1200 with my child, of course. So, now neither of us can pay our rent, power, phone, and internet to do our school work. If anyone knows of someone that I can express my thoughts with that can help all of us with college aged children getting the help they need, please forward my email address: fretwellbama@gmail.com. Good luck to ALL!

        2. This whole situation is ridiculous. In 2019 my child was still in high school and he was 16 he turned 17 in October 2019 more than 10 months of the year and I did not receive any money for my child and doesn’t even graduate high school till 2021

      2. I’m 48 yrs old i live alone on ssi i let my mom use me as a dependant on her taxes I live on $783.00 a month I don’t get the stimulus check its not right i dont know how. Letting someone claim u as a dependant stop a disabled person from getting it it’s wrong people in jail get it it’s just not right we have to wait a year we need it now

        1. I agree with you Crystal, My granddaughter was having a hard time, so I allow her to claim me a as dependent on her tax return, I just wanted to help her. I am 67 years old, and because I allowed my granddaughter to claim me for the 2019 tax return, I will also not be getting the stimulus check. It so unfair, not just for me, but for all the others who were claimed as dependents. This was the first time my granddaughter claimed me on her 2019 tax return.

          1. I am very sympathetic to how hard things can be right now with everything going on. But you and Chrystal are forgetting one very important aspect. You both LET someone claim you
As dependents. Do u realize that was dishonest?? Crystals mother and your granddaughter most likely did not support you in the majority for the year. In fact u both lied to get extra money. I am not judging Bc I do get it. But u portrayed yourself in a way that isn’t so, could technically get fined for that also. Maybe look at it as u both already for money u really didn’t have coming so this time you are not? Not that we knew this would happen but it’s still a consequence of your prior decision.

            1. I am 52 years and on disability. Draw $823.00 a month and worked some in 2019, however my boyfriend provides the majority of my support. He. Rightly claimed me as a dependent. This made me intelligible and to add insult to injury he is owed $30,000.00 in child support and owes $15,000.00 for a 27 year old adult child he gave has never laid eyes on and gave up his parental rights on as an infant.
He did not receive his stimulus check it went to child support and he did not receive the child support that is owed to him…
Under the new bill will I be able to get a stimulus check?

          2. I’m on ssdi and share an apartment with my daughter because of medical issues and can’t afford to be on my own with my income. She claimed me as a dependent so now I’m eligible for a stimulus check. I dont understand because it doesn’t change my expenses. And I didn’t receive an income tax check, so I have to suffer and receive no help and I’m on a fixed income. How fair is that

        2. Everyone is so right.. I am 62 yrs old and disabled.. i am on ssdi and my daughter and son in law claim me as a dependent , well only one of them can legally, and my son in law does, i live with them there are things i can not do alone and because legally he can claim me i did not receive the stimulus check. It is so wrong. President Trump is not a stupid man when it comes to money i do not know who did this and said but if you are a certain age or disabled and claimed as a dependent you can not get the stimulus check.. I also only live on 780.00 a month and pay rent to my children because i live with them .. I only can pray if there is another stimulus check we are not left out of it…This is very sad and yes i was very upset..

        3. I am 60 years old I am going to be 61 in June. I live on 1200 dollars a month Social security. I let my son claim me and I also didn’t receive a stimulus check. I believe that is so unfair. My son tries to help me when he can ,and that could have helped me take pressure off of him for trying to help me. I am on disability that could have enabled ume to pay my bills and not have to be such a burdan on him
I know people who don’t even try to work and they got a check I have worked my entire life Just about. None the less I wasn’t eligible because I allowed my son to claim me. How is this fair? Was told every American would receive help I guess I am no one.Linda

          1. I’m 50 years old I don’t even get 600 for disability the person I live with claims me as a dependent and I’m not able to get a stimulus check. I pay bills just like everybody else and I am so far under the poverty level level that’s not even funny but yet I don’t qualify for the stimulus check. I’m just curious as to how that is I meet the below poverty level but I don’t qualify for a stimulus check? The cost of things going up because of the coronavirus affects me too I don’t get a break because I get SSI. Might I add I worked most of my life I still can’t even get $700 for SSI and I still can’t qualify for stimulus check how is that fair to people in my position? Maybe class action lawsuit will wake somebody’s ass up because I doubt they’re going to reimburse us if there’s another round of stimulus checks.

            1. And if they do reimburse us will have to jump through every hoop known possible to get it it’s a no-win situation and it sad.

      3. I am in complete Agreement as 3 of my children and my mom are all grown now. My oldest 22 Serves USAF to protect these individuals that care little concern for his Grandmother whom I claim as a Dependent as she is on SSI n needs help daily. And his Brother n Sister whom I claim n still finishing high school 19, 20 under my roof… Maybe something can be done but I’m very disappointed at this time in the oversight. $1200 for 4 People. Maybe those students that were Skipped will replace those Congressional Leaders and Show how Karma Works… God Bless!!! To those Young Dependents I will just say to never ever forget that they forgot you and ignored you in these times of need! Saddest part is I’m raising them, providing for them and battling cancer. It’s long term battle, not a viral infection… God Bless you all!!!

      4. My son lived with me last year so I claimed him on taxes. He also claimed himself as he worked, but did not make much money then. He was 17 then and 18 now. Since then he has moved out on his own. He has not received any of the 12 hundred dollars and he has bills to pay. I think this is so wrong to over look them, especially the ones really trying. There needs to be something done to help them also. He is trying hard to make it on his own.

    2. That’s not right we are a family of 5 single mom with an 18 17 12 and my mother is 66 sole bread winner all my childens still in school

    3. I just received my stimulus package I have a 14 year old and a 16 year old. The 16 year old does not turn 17 until July 2020
So I guess they are cutting them off at age 16

      1. I meant to add I received no money for my 16 year old and he does not turn 17 until July. So they need to rephrase at age 16 no money for them

    4. Those of us who support an elderly parent should receive extra as well. My mom is 83 and filed a return with taxes due on her ss income because she had to cash out a small annuity to pay medical bills, but as my dependent, she is ineligible. This is WRONG!!!

    5. Ahem… Gene Nelson… the inhumanity from the Republicans?!? I seem to recall that it was the Democrats who insisted on $$$ from this stimulus package to go to the likes of:

$25M to the John F. Kennedy Center, $75M to Corporation for Public Broadcasting, $1.2Billion to require airlines to purchase more expensive fuel, $7.5M to the Smithsonian Institute, $200M to Museum and Library Services and National Endowment of Arts.

All of that money could have been used to help parents who have kids between 16-18, are supporting college students, or who have adult “kids” with disabilities like me, but NOooooo. Apparently Ms. Pelosi can spend our money on better things. So who are the deplorables again?!?

      1. I completely agree!! I have 2 disabled sons who are 23 and like you… I feel they should qualify. Being disabled, claimed by a parent on taxes and them being an adult makes them less deserving!!!! They still need our financial support and care. It’s RIDICULOUS!!!!

      2. Great Point I agree 100%, What did any of that Money the Democrats asked to be distributed to all those organizations have to do with COVID 19 NANCY??? I have a 17 and 19-year old who I claim as my dependents, I’m a single parent and no child support so totally unfair that we the parent get not even the $500. I originally heard this was an accident and was just something that got overlooked. Now I’m reading and it sounds like nothing is going to be done at all to fix this but perhaps it will be considered for the next stimulus package. No way, they need to go back and fix this it is not ok!!!

      3. Completely agree. If it wasn’t for the people it should have not been in there. Then to try to put all blame on Republicans for something of nature that checks were held up cause the president wanted his name on checks is absurd. I am nearly completely certain a rubber stamp with his name had alrady been produced and checks simply will take a little longer. However diverting money for things few actually have an opportunity to enjoy is completely irresponsible.

    6. This was TOTALLY UNFAIR! I am also a single mom of an 18 yr old who I claimed as a dependent on my taxes, he just graduated at age 18 in Sept.2019, he did online school and got his GED because hes autism spectrum, and ALL DEPENDENTS should be included for the $500 not just children under age 17, it makes no sense, it should go according to the IRS tax laws of what a dependent is, a dependent is a dependent and people with kids lets say 15 got it and they also got the perks on their taxes, this is so unjust, maybe I’ll sue!

    7. I am a single mom in Texas taking care of my autistic diabetic son and he was over the age of 17 so he did not get a stimulus check.witch I think is unfair. I think all the disabled people should have gotten something.

    8. I am 29 pay my own taxes and have bills like anyone else. It looks like I won’t be help again if they decide to make sure “dependents aren’t left out.” I’m not between 16 and 24.

    9. Democrats were just as guilty. They held all the cards as Donald Trump needed this stimulus. They could have refused to sign until everyone was included. They didn’t bother and now they don’t get to point fingers. It’s the pot talking about the kettle.

    10. Yes i to dont understand this. I have a first year CUNY College student whom live at home. Whom is supported by me.

    11. My Husband filed his 2018 taxes to which the irs held for 7 months and then after going to court for his child support he realised the money never even went towards it. So after calling the IRS about why they never filed it they told him they held onto the due to fraudulent purposes! So he went to the IRS office with all documents and was told to give them 4-6weeks to process them well that was Feb,13,2020 so once the IRS assured him that they had everything they needed to process his 2018 taxes we had filed his 2019 taxes on Feb, 28,2020 an still to this day his taxes has not been filed at all and since he claimed my uncle who his on SSI and who lives with us as well and me as dependents he wouldn’t have gotten a stimulus for us which I don’t believe is right but since the IRS never fully processed his taxes that means he won’t get a stimulus for himself and our 2 kids that live with us because it will go to back pay child support that our taxes would have paid completely off and my uncle can’t move because he won’t get a stimulus in general! Sorry if I have s lot of typo errors but I’m just very frustrated with all of this. My Husbsnd supports all of us and we don’t know when he will ever get his refund for 2018 or 2019 since the IRS is completely avoiding all of there tax payers that are having issues like waiting 3-6months or maybe longer for refunds they desperately need. Thanks government we really appreciate it! And as for his back pay! He pays his support and back support every week for 2yrs but he got behind years ago when he lost his job and was unable to work from a accident so not every father is a dead beat since the government is taking all stimulus and putting it towards back pay as well! Rediculous

    12. I claimed my son for the $500 extra my name is ken salvio I’m a single father and only got the $1200 they say social security people don’t have to do anything then then say fill out the non filers form I did it and still didn’t get the $500 his mother is $12,000 behind in support I got nothing on that end how do I get the $500 for my son we need it

    13. My son 46 is disabled collects SSI . I am his payee and mother .He has direct deposit account in my name and my sons his SSI ck goes in ea month .I do not claim him on my taxes nor is he my dependant .Why has he not recieved a stimulus check .

    14. Funny your say it’s Repubs fault when I’m FACT it was the Dems who controlled the stimulus details!! Stop spreading hate based off of nonsense lies you “think” you know! People do these things then wonder why good fortune evades them and then whine about it and blame others because of no check! I didn’t need the check, like most others I know. Wasn’t even expecting one yet I got blessed with them and I am thankful for what I got . Oh and I pray for every leader to have guidance in their decisions on the next round so that the ones left out, will be remembered. I’m my opinion, unless you lost a job directly because of this or a business, you didn’t need one of these either. Just free money. Now I’m not saying this about those who have been directly effected by Covid financially. I know Disabled people don’t work so they didn’t lost their jobs. They’re just mad their hand didn’t get the free handout. I get it trust me, but don’t act so high and mighty. None need this money except for directly hurt Covid Victims!

      1. I agree with most of what you said about the people complaining about not getting stimulus, and I agree it’s not the Republicans who are at fault, however, I take issue with your blanket statement about disabled people not losing jobs because “they don’t work”. I am disabled, on disability, am raising a teenaged son, and pay taxes, as well as have held the same job for 5 years. The disabled CAN and many DO work, but since I cannot work full time due to income limits and my physical limitations, should I be chastised? I work, am raising a child, do not receive child support, food stamps, unemployment or TANF, and #1. MY department at my “essential” business is “non-essential” and is closed until the CDC says otherwise, plus #2. my underlying health conditions make me “at-risk” for contracting the virus should I go to work to do anything else, which means I am not able to be at work, (but I do have a job)= NO PAYCHECK. I have a teenage son that turned 17 two weeks ago, so unless the stimulus rules change, NO STIMULUS for him, and he is a full-time student, and does not work. Sorry for the rant, but I take offense to the statement that the disabled do not work. YES… I work, yes, I have a dependent son, and YES, we BOTH deserve the help.

  2. The best stimulus is a good job. Let’s put our efforts into protecting the vulnerable, 65 or older with underlying health issues and get back to work. This spending monstrosity, CARES act, is a bandaid only. With the models now showing deaths from Covid 19 being reduced by millions from original models, it is time to start transferring back to normal.. Who can hide in their basement the best and who can be the most panicked has to stop at some point. Our economy is our strength, we need to get our economic engine back running, not complain about a group who didn’t get check. Trillions of dollars being spent now, too much for my taste, I’m sure not everyone will be happy.

    1. How is a seventeen-year-old high school student supposed to get a “good job”? Why should their parents receive less benefit than the parents of a ten-year-old? You’re just spewing talking points without any regard to the subject of this article.

      1. The bill was a toss in the dark for the most part. It bases it on your income from last year, so say you made too much last year because you worked 2 jobs and this year you lost one of your jobs, you don’t get the 1200.00.
The whole thing should have been aimed more at people who lost their jobs and can’t pay rent/mortgage and then assisting small businesses as well as food supports. Also hiring more workers to process claims. And to some extent with accountability, larger companies so then can get people back to work.

      2. The good job is for the parent, so they can support their own children. The CARES act is only a bandaid to get folks past this Coronavirus panic and back to work. As always, the Federal Govt should be there to help folks who need it but the best form of family care and well faring is a good job.

        1. Joe, and where are these good jobs you speak of? Nobody WANTS a minimum wage job, nobody WANTS a short work week, but it’s all that’s out there.

    2. Those 65 or older belong to the wealthiest generation in history. They have fat 401Ks, pensions and SS. The people who need help are the younger folks who are bearing the brunt of the pandemic. It amazes me how the people most upset about the prospect of other people receiving government checks are the ones who receive monthly government checks.

      1. Jim, I’m 65. My 401k was depleted in the recession of the 2007- 2009. I also became disabled. You have narrow thinking if you truly believe this. The government took all of the money’s that we had. When I became disabled I was 54. The government retired me early. That means they are sending me MY retirement instead of paying front the disability fund that I paid into for 40 yrs. They kept that money too. So for the last 11 yrs I have paid myself to be disabled. I live on $806 a month. With a car payment of $200 and Insurances costing $100 that leaves me with $500 a month to live on. Many other seniors are in my shoes. I hope you rethink “this”rich generation.

        1. I apologize if I offended you and I am sympathetic to your situation but I was responding to Joe who seems to think older people who are already receiving government checks should be an economic priority over people living off of nothing You’re getting $800/month (which I understand is not very much) but these young waitresses, cooks, clerks, salesmen etc; many with kids who are laid off from work aren’t getting anything at the moment. They need some help.

          1. So myself as an example I haven’t received a payment I filed my own taxes for 2018-2019 my mother claims me as dependent on her taxes. So the government IRS whoever is in control basically skipped us forgot about us now we sit back and watch everyone get a stimulus check while students young adults who file taxes but are dependents get nothing all because were dependents makes no sense so now we’re stuck wondering what we’re going to do because the government skipped/forgot about us!!!!

          2. Have you yourself ever tried living on less than 1,000 a month? Especially when your significant other is out of work. My fiance is a mason contractor and winter is usually hard cause he can’t work then so yes he did file me as dependent because we have been together for 13 years and needed that extra winter money. I am taking classes trying to get my RN. My cancer came back and I have to take care of his 76 year old mother who can’t walk with half a heart so I don’t want to rely on government but things happen. Life happens and that 1200 Could have changed my life. I have no problem with waitresses and others struggling getting money. By all means they should get money also . But when his sister and brother law both get 1200 dollars when he has 6 figure income and still is working that bothered me.150,000 Dollars is alot of money for two people. We made less than 60,000 between us in 2018 and 2019 and construction was shut down three weeks after he finally went back to work So not ok. Rich get richer and poor stay poor. I know it wasn’t to help Individuals. They should have given more money to people who truly need it instead of giving money to people who haven’t been affected financially. Not sure how people making next to nothing are excluded or why you think they shouldn’t be upset.

      2. So untrue. Just because SOME people in that age group are wealthy, it doesn’t mean they all are. You need to ask some people over 65 if they’re wealthy, living off government checks every month. Do you know what a “good” ss check amounts to? About $1500 a month before deductions.

      3. I think you must be referring to the majority of the GOP sitting in the US Senate and House. It certainly isn’t myself, my husband and people I know our age; in our mid 60s. I’ve worked since I was 16, put myself through college, retired a few yrs ago due to disability, my husband is still working and has so for 41 yrs, Navy Vet and we have watched our retirement money tank recently and in past recession. Wealthy is not an accurate portrayal of us. And we have a disabled adult daughter who lives with us. I have 2 sons in their mid 20s and are terribly affected and cannot work because of Covid19 restrictions. These are frightening times for many. But the wealthy 1% in this country are far from hurting, in fact it has made no significant adverse difference in their daily lives. They are quite comfortable.

    3. These kids 17 and up who don’t get accounted for matter and have to be fed, treated and or tested if they get sick. To say they’re using enough $ to pay Americans already is unjust! I’m disabled with a 17 yr old. Currently we’re homeless and struggling in wait for some sort of help/relief. There is no aid out there for us! My kid is struggling just as bad if not worse than many. These kids should not b excluded! I bet you’ll b in line looking for ur $ if u get skipped being paid! Shame on u for saying anything about worrying about more important matters! These kids r our future! Plenty of payments won’t b touched anyways because people r out there dropping like flies. What about the no child left behind act? Now when we’re in the biggest crisis ever we’re just gonna exclude kids due to their age? I have 1 minor. We’re low income. Why should we be outed while the family across the street get an extra $2,000 cuz they have 4 kids under 17. plus the package would of included them if it was passed 2 wks ago. That extra $500 was going to help end our homelessness. Now the stimulus money I get is just going to b wasted on a motel room. Some need to think before they open their mouth. And this kid over her is thriving to get out there to work, but we lost everything. So now it’s harder than normal to get the documents required to be hired unless they pay cash. But even if these kids did hang out in the basement, that’s not ur business. I don’t hear u saying ur gonna refuse ur stimulus check! ✌️

    4. Umm, you understand this particular spending was NOT as relief for the individuals to whom the money is dispersed as 1200 is not exactly a large sum, nor will it last any length of time. The purpose for it to be spent into the economy thereby creating and supporting those “good jobs” you so seek. Excluding those that it does, limits that effect. Just think Joe, you’ve been voting for Keynesians all along!

      1. Matt, not a fan at all of the CARE act, no way Govt can spend that much money with any efficiency. Helping out those who need it will always leave out some people.. That is why the best welfare is a good job. The least amount you depend on Government the better off you will be and the least amount of folks depending on the Government the more efficient they will be. Big run away Government always will let you down, always!

        1. Willing to bet you won’t be holding it against your Republican legislators in the fall. So why, exactly, are you complaining when you have no plans to do anything about it?

    5. I tell my 17 year old senior in High School, that school is her full time job. I thought 18 years old was the “legal” adult age? Why were our High School Seniors cut off with the stimulus money? This is the most expensive year in school, AND it has been robbed by the pandemic. Don’t think for a moment that us parents haven’t ALREADY paid for the things they won’t even be able to participate in. School trips, cap and gown, senior picnic, prom, etc. The logic for 16 and under is WAY off.

      1. I TOTALLY AGREE IM WITH U. I HAVE A 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND SENIOR YEAR HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BE THE MOST EXPENSIVE. AND CHALLENGING YEAR. WE HAVE PAID FOR PIC. AS WELL AS CAP AND GOWN. SHE WONT GET TO GO TO THE PROM SHE WONT GET TO GO ON HER SENIOR TRIP THE MOST MEMORABLE IMPORTANT YEAR IN A YOUR KIDS LIFE HAS BEEN ROBBED BY THIS PANDEMIC. MY DAUGHTER WAS AT LEAST LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING THAT MONEY. AT LEAST THAT WOULD B SOMETHING GOOD. FOR HER SENIOR YEAR AND FOR ALL OTHER SENIORS OUT THERE THAT JUST HAD THERE SENIOR YEAR RIPPED APART. IT BULL AND ITS NOT FAIR. LEAVE IT TO THE GOVERMENT TO FIND SOME WAY TO SCREW SOME PEOPLE OUT OF MONEY.

    6. Someone has been listening to much to the president. Have you also tried chloroquine? Stop with this nonsense we are no where near ready to open this country up for the sake of your economic disaster this president caused due to the lack of response, how can you sit there and say its time to start our economic engine as everything was ok? The 1% got trillions while the poor gets cheated in every possible way, damn politicians, they are all corrupt!

    7. Are you serious , my 17 year old and myself didn’t get any money because my daughter who had different girls all over booking her to do their makeup for prom she lost out on because they canceled school. That’s good money for a teen thats trying to save up for a car before she goes off to college. I get ssi but my brother filed me as a dependent on his taxes, he lives with me most of the time because there are days I just cant really function. To make ends meet because $783 for 2 kids and myself is garbage so i go to goodwill buy $ 75 clothes bust my ass doing this , take it to the local thrift stores and resell making about a $75 profit after i go to the different stores . Its how I survive well they closed all the places I was able to make my extra money I needed to cover my bills. So damn I think I have a right to complain…oh and before you say anything about well maybe if you every worked you would get ssdi instead off ssi and the answer is I worked since the age of 16 .. Katrina hit us I relocated to go back to school to get my masters in physiology and became disabled in the time area of the system shifting and ended up being 1 quarter short so there goes that in a nut shell. My disability was caused by hormone replacement medication it caused a benign tumor on my liver that grew into my vena cava almost killing me had to have my chest cracked open and on top of that i cant sue the drug company because of the time gap it took years for me to know thats the reason i almost died. I cou look d file class action …. if anybody else was alive from this but until someone catches it before it kills them like I did im just stuck in this messed up situation.

  3. Members of Congress did not even read the bill before overwhelmingly passing it unanimously in the Senate and by a voice vote rather than a roll call vote in the House. Then after giving obscene gifts to corporations and peanuts to average people, they go on a month’s vacation while food workers, delivery people, health care workers, and people who drive the economy have to work in dangerous conditions.
This bailout was the latest example of both political parties being controlled by corporate America. To think that average Americans will receive anything of substance in the future is ridiculous, and proposals now are simply political theater designed to attract votes.

    1. One additional point. Robert Reich, the labor secretary in the Clinton Administration, stated in a recent interview that corporations did not need any money and this bailout was designed to further consolidate power in the hands of the large corporations.

    2. Yes it seems like they didn’t but now all of the congress and senate representatives knew and needs to address this at all. I will request to all to contact their local senate and congress representative to address this in the next stimulus bill and it is not too late at all. How it possible a child living with their parents a high school student is not consider as dependent child and a child going to college and parents are paying their tuition fees living with the parents not consider at all in this stimulus package surprise to me….. this could a 10th kid would understand better than those the so call leaders or representatives sitting in the congress and senate come on guys get up raise this issue with your local representatives
      Thanks

  4. Don’t forget to include the ones thAt will be graduating this May. They may be over 21 but due to this virus, the chances of getting a job focused on their degree is slim to none. They are coming into the workforce at a hard time. Student loans in September will start charging interest again and payments will have to be made!

  5. I thought the age was lower because they were using 2018 taxes. So a 16 y/o in 2018 would be 18 now. Hmmm.

    1. Elisa, respectfully, your thought is wrong. My daughter, a junior in high school turned 17 on December of 2019. I see your way of thinking but the intent is to deliver help now. “Now” she is 17 and under my care with $0 of suppor from the stimulus for her. She turns 18 in December.

I also have a 20 year old who has filed his own taxes (2018,2019 included) who is also getting $0 support from the stimulus because he is considered my dependent.

I hope it was an honest mistake from higher and it can get resolved. I can see a wording error for 17 year olds, somewhat?? but completely leaving out 18-24 year olds?

  6. This needs to be corrected. Any child that is a dependent up to the age of 24 parents should get a check.

  7. I am in Oklahoma ~ I have a 28 year old disabled daughter
Her income is $781 a month~ I got her an apartment with a roommate ~ I am paying majority of her bills~ she’s my dependent. It’s so heartbreaking to know the stimulus money isn’t for her😭 Also for the elderly people to be left out!
Who ever put this part into non qualification ~ should be ashamed of themselves ~ But instead they think the airlines needs billions~ Don’t mention the college students ~ This is so painful on all levels😭 The President said all Americans will qualify🤷🏿‍♀️
Why? The most important people who depends on us will not receive a dime!!
Lord Have Mercy On Us All🙏🏾🙏🏾

    1. I’m sorry to hear that. It’s very depressing because your tax dollars from working daily and weekly went to those who didn’t work for the year. In a time of an emergency crisis every individual regardless of age should recieve a stimulus check. Many adults takes care of their elderly parents and their children claims them as a dependent wont receive a refund which is unfair. It takes more to care for disabled, elderly and those with disabilities. Our tax dollars is what they are giving to the economy. We worked when some didn’t. Stay safe and stay strong
America is all about their money they’ve never been in the working class shoes so they’ll never know how it fits

    2. Its Unbelievable That Disabled Adults were Not included in this.
My Disabled adult Son,35, is still listed as a Dependent on our
tax returns. He is Really Missing his Job at “School” and His $15. “Pay Check” & cant Understand why his school is closed. His ssi only covers part of his expenses we provide
All of the rest. Its still hard to believe these people were left out.
Most People i Know with Disabled/Handicapped Relations are listed
as Older Dependents to Help there Loved Ones who can not care for
themselves. They are More Deserving of this Than Most of Us. Hopefully this Can Be Corrected as These are our most
      vulnerable of All !

  8. I think its unfair to the families who cares for individuals over the ages of 18 especially those who take in their elderly parents. I understand that they may get social security but the cost of caring for them is more expensive. Many Americans claim their elderly as a dependent because they live in their household. So the government will give stimulus check to those with no income when it’s really the tax dollars of the working people. The working people tax dollars goes to those who doesn’t get income but gets denied funds for taking care of their elderly dispite if they receive social security. That’s unfair because it’s the working people’s money. They pay taxes yearly, take so much funds out of their payroll checks, tax them to cash their checks and you tax them for each purchase. The government should had given every single American a check weather they were claimed as a dependent or not even if they receive social security but was claimed by someone. So you are giving those who hasn’t worked my tax dollars but denied my elderly parents for a stimulus check during a crisis? That’s really depressing as a working American who pays taxes

  9. I live in Michigan and I’m 17, I turned 17 March 24th right before the stimulus bill was passed. I live independently without my parents and I lost my job due to covid, my mom did file me with her on her taxes still though, and I’m just curious as to if my mom will get the 500$ for me still or if she’s not going too since I was 16 when she did our taxes. Like how are the 16-17 year olds who moved out of their parents supposed to live when we now have no jobs and don’t qualify for the stimulus? This is so wack

    1. It is SO wack, Madison. My daughter is 20, filed her own taxes, pays her own bills and is somehow neglected of the stimulus as you are. I did file her because I pay her college tuition. But other than that she is self sufficient. It is totally unfair to you guys!! How in the hell did this group of young, responsible adults get overlooked??? I am livid!! We need to know of someone in the government that we can express our concerns and worries to on this. If you find out this info, will you please forward to me at fretwellbama@gmail.com. My name is Bama. Good luck to you Madison (:

  10. As a family of 3 people we were depending on the stimulus checks to help us stay afloat during this very difficult time. I just learned today that my disabled son, whom I claim as a dependent, will not be receiving a stimulus check. Also my husband, who pays child support, had all but $81 of his stimulus check garnished for back child support that he doesn’t even owe. We are in total disbelief of how this happened. The system is broken, and does not work! My husband’s exwife and her husband received $4400 in stimulus money on top of the other $1100 that she will, and probably has received from my husband’s. Not to mention that they are both still working, and we’re not. I am so beyond frustrated. We have to try and get by on $1281 when this will not even begin to cover our bills. Does the government not think that disabled adults that are being taken care of by their parents don’t have needs to be met as well? Why are they being left out? Hopefully they’ll come up with some kind of solution to this problem.

  11. So, I’m a 32 year old female and I have lived separate from my mother since the age of 16! Due to my disability Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis since the age of 12 my mother has always filed me on her taxes and now with things so up in the air due to covid 19 the struggle is real and now I find out I don’t even qualify for the stimulus payout for SSI approved individuals is very nerve wracking! Like what exactly are we supposed to do now? I just don’t understand. We go through so much with the economic changes and its not fair! I’m not in Minnesota I live in the East Texas but I had to be heard because I don’t think its understood what we go through as American citizens who need the help the most. Please consider the facts written in all of our testimonials because life was hard enough before Covid 19 Now its just complete madness! Thanks but no thanks….. For what?

  12. Got the stimulus money today but got it for the wife and I and not for the 3 kids. Anyone else have this problem?

  13. My 28 yr old daughter is disabled and lives with us, I find it utterly outrageous that she is not entitled to receive the Covid-19 Stimulus check whatsoever. She has just undergone another brain surgery this time for a brain tumor end of January in Minnesota at the Mayo Clinic. She has endured numerous brain surgeries since 2011 and has been disabled since 2011, she could not afford to live on her own with what little she receives from SSD. We live in New Mexico but have had to travel frequently for out of state for her healthcare and her surgeries.

And now with this Covid 19 pandemic I am worried about my husband’s job, he may soon me furloughed as well. My adult sons are not working because of the state shutdown which directly affected them both so they cannot “work from home”.
The NEXT US gov’t bailout needs to/MUST include EVERYONE in this country with a stimulus check. To exclude adult children with disabilities who must live at home and those children older than 16 is simply WRONG and UNFAIR. The Democrats in Congress really must push for this. I am tired of Republicans being so damn self centered selfish and basically don’t give a damn about the majority of this country who are not wealthy. It needs to change.

  14. I’m 23 as of feb 22 I’m independent I’ve worked since I was 17 and started filling income taxes at the age of 18 I haven’t lived at home since the age of 17 and I’ve been independent since! My mom claimed me as dependent and I never received my stimulus check and she never received the 500$ I’m a tax payer in a time of some help and I’ve been denied because my mom claimed me!! That’s absolutely the biggest crock of sh*t I’ve ever heard! Just because I was claimed Dosent give the right for me to be declined my check!! Fix this in the next set of checks

  15. I am very upset that the government decided to exclude children 17 and older. I am a single mother of an eighteen year old and a seventeen year old. I am not working due to the virus. I am not sure how the expect me to pay bills, take care of myself and two growing teenagers with only $1200! This is very frustrating and I wish our government would take everyone into consideration at this time.

  16. What if you’re 16 and you filed taxes, but nobody claimed you. This seems to be left out in every article I have read.

      1. so do we qualify? Me and my 17 year old sister have the same problem we filed our own taxes but no one claims us

  17. My sons are 23 today, Receive SSI for Autism. I claim them on my taxes but they do not receive EIC. They are 23!! Just because I claim them they miss out on the stimulus check we so desperately need. How can they not be considered eligible? This goes for the elderly also, they are not included in the stimulus either and regardless…. they still have to be taken care if financially by someone. It should include all people who are in the lower income bracket. It’s ridiculous for these individuals to be overlooked

  18. I am a single mother with a 18 yr old with autism who is still in school and receive SSDI from his deceased father. I myself also receive SSDI neither one of us was eligible for the stimulus check, It has been so hard for us since the unexpected lost of his dad. I do the best that I can with what I am given but being on a fixed income that stimulus check would have been helpful to us. I am still very disappointed I can’t understand how such intellectuals could put their heads together and still make such a reckless decision.

    1. I agree.. it really has the appearance that they are discriminatory towards certain groups of individuals like us, and getting away from helping us who are far more vulnerable than their elitist cushy positions are.. fat chance that whoever is responsible for this will be a reelected official.. whoever wrote this law utilizing its loophole in a crisis time such as this and whoever agrees that this is fair, equal, without bias, and without prejudice, is a delusional individual”s” and has failed citizenry, and breeched there agreement to protect citizenry, and denied, deprived, and discriminated against various groups of individuals based on the definitive of inequality per amendment 14..

  19. I agree. This is so wrong. I am an adult on SSI disability and my boyfriend claimed me as a dependent on his taxes. I still pay bills out of my check which is only $783 a month. It’s all gone by the third day of the month. Why am I being punished for being poor and getting some help? If I’m getting help then I obviously need the money. Why then wouldn’t I qualify for a check? This makes no sense. I don’t see the government getting together again and passing another bill and getting us any money. We will be left out completely.

  20. Someone needs to send these comments to the white house or somewhere so we can get help. My son lived with me for 7 months last year because I had to have 2 surgeries I let him claim me as dependant this year. I will not receive the stimulus and it’s total bullshit because even when he was here he didn’t pay my bills or buy my food all he did was take me to appointments and help me get around my apartment…it’s not right that we can’t get the stimulus all they gave was $500 for dependant so send me the other$700 like seriously…. Someone need to do something about the disabled we are left out of everything…

  21. Everyone email the president. I just did and I will keep emailing them until I get results

  22. What a crock! This is pure and simple inequality at its core, and a b.s. Loophole to save greedy buracrats more pocketbook money for themselves.. this shows how calloused, and uncaring certain individuals in power are towards certain groups of people.. and nothing has truly changed regarding prejudice.. doesn’t matter if you are black, brown, white, red, yellow or whatever.. if you are a poor, struggling individual, we are forgotten, undesired, and neglected by certain individual officials.. pure and simple inequality, prejudice, 14th amendment violating, discriminatory targeting of specific groups of individuals, this is wrong, and shameful on every damn level, I’m mad as hell about this hypocritical, discriminatory excuse through a loophole… There is no justifiable reasoning behind this b.s. think about it for a moment… What difference is there between giving stimulus to someone who doesn’t pay taxes and receives a payment, and someone who is claimed as a adult dependent yet receives no money from being claimed… This is pure greed, and unethically biased, prejudice, discriminatory targeting by certain elected officials who could give 2 squats about those they were elected to serve.. they are breeching their agreement, hypocritical oath, and failing to be ethical and without bias or favoritism towards selected groups of individuals.. pure inequality and prejudice! This b.s. nerds to be stopped, or resign from said position..

    1. Sorry for the grammatical error, “nerds” amended to read “needs” thank you..

      1. I am 66 and receive Social Security I live by myself and I support myself. My Damn uncle claimed me as a dependent he does not support me and I have never lived with him in my life I did not give him permission to claim me as a dependent. I worked part time in 2018 and when I filed my taxes they were rejected now because of the selfish thing that my uncle did I will not receive my Stimulus Check isn’t this Fraud?

        1. I was counting on that Stimulus check now because of him I wont see a dime of it.

    2. I agree with you 100 on your post. They leave these folks out and left behind. Meanwhile, some others already have unemployment coming in with a extra $600. Some folks have SS checks already coming in. Dependents have nothing. They in a lot of cases aren’t directly getting any money to buy essential items or pay for common things like their phone bills. These folks in Congress should have seen what would happen if you leave people behind. For some, this action could trigger a change in behavior due to the lack of experience with having any income to live off of

    3. this is well said.I was one of those discriminated against because by getting help from a family member and letting him claim me I was left out of the stimulis money. hope they change it with the next one if there is a next one.i have bills too

  23. I think this is so unfairly leaving out children over 18 teen my daughter is in college and disabled why are they left out of a stimulus check it cost more for us to take care of a 18 teen year old in college then a child under 16 shame on them they need to do better but they really don’t care I see this needs to be published where the whole world can see cruel cruel world

    1. It makes no sense. I was claimed on my parents taxes, and I filed my own. I was 17 at the time and now I’m
18, and I have no received one stimulus check. And the messed up part is that I am Ann american citizen, I work, and I file my taxes, and I live on my own! I am receiving zero help with bills.
This world is messed up indeed. I’m grateful that I can work to pay these bills Bc otherwise I would be so behind….

  24. I think it is not right either to leave a handicap person out of the stimulus check because they deserve it too even if they are over the age of 17 and can’t walk or talk it not fare at all but you can pay these big company all this money and we are the American people with less can’t receive any thing ridiculous

  25. Anyone do the math by chance? 150,000,000 people they say are qualifying…. 🤔 there are 330,000,000 people approximately in the us. 🤔 mmmmm
Lets just see what if each of the 330,000,000 million got a $1200 check ????? 😑 $ 396,000,000,000 🤨 where did all that money go again? 1.84 trillion left over if every women, man and child where to receive $1200. To the people who put this stimulus together, SHAME ON YOU! it wasn’t for the people it was for something else…. anyone feel like peasants at the bottom of the kings castle surrounded by moat begging for bread???

  26. Well. it seems that I to have been screwed out of the stimulus payment. I am one hundred percent disabled and live with friends.I pay less rent because most of my money goes to my health issues and special diet because of allergies. So, I let my roommate claim me on his taxes and now I do not get the payment. Not only is that wrong, but I see this has happened to many others as well. I have cats that needed to go to the vet and this would of helped me take care of them. This country really ha gone to heck that they are hurting the people they so called were supposed to be helping. On top of all that, then screw families out of the money for age of 16…. That is ridiculous, since when is the age of 16 an adult? Not many 16 year old can support themselves, specially not the ones now adays… The bigger issues is that we are going to have to wait another year for our payment to go through even if they change it so we do get the money…. Disappointed is all I can say….

  27. I don’t live in minn but I have the same problem as some of you and my rep arnt doing anything about it I see that you are addressing the dependent problem within the next covid package. please don’t forget us seniors that don’t make enough to file taxes and a family member helps us out and claims us as dependents we didn’t get anything from the last stimulis. my living expenses have gone up my 50% and I m trying to live on the same ssa amount. we need help too

    1. Mrs Craig. I for one thank you trying to reverse such a unjust decision but, this was done not just to college students it was also done to high school students and seniors who are still also trying to be source of support to their family members dependent or none dependents. This is the world we live in the people that have the least do the most. I see many of seniors who are fragile and disabled forcing themselves in brutal weather to go and vote for the same people who let them down.😡 I am hearing talks of them reversing their bad decision in the next stimulus package and I hope it’s factual and its not just talk find where they get their give them back as retroactive payment and amended their wrong doings.

      1. By the way I know that most individual that are receiving SSA or SSDIA or SSI have their own bank account so why not send them their payments directly To the source also allow 18- 24 yr old to directly add their own info to the IRS payment system to get their payments to eliminate fraudulent behaviors.

  28. My son turned 18 in December and was set to graduate and move to MD for an internship program. Obviously he is still home and has always lived with us, his parents full time all his life. We were able to clam him on taxes but, he’s not eligible for the stimulus? I’ve heard other parents that got their 500 per child in this age bracket so why some and not all or none? I’m confused. I just accepted we didn’t get it Neil he said then I’m claiming it for myself. I thought he might get in trouble if he tried. I told him I would look into it.

  29. I can’t understand just because I’m a dependent on my daughter’s taxes I can’t get the stimulus. That makes no sense ,she claims me because of all the Dr.appt.she takes me too ,all the meds she helps pay for because my check doesnt cover them all or the copays or food she may sneak in my house .She’s a great caring daughter. That stimulus would help me take of me for once so she can worry about herself and children.

  30. This is stupidity! I am an 18 year old American Citizen who filed my taxes when I was 17. I turned 18 soon after, and I moved out! But since my parents claimed me, and I’m in this age gap, I get nothing to help me?! I am living on my own and they decide to put this age gap? What sense does that make?
That system needs to reformation, because majority of young adults are moving out between age 17-23. Why don’t we get a check? Even if it’s the $500 one. That would pay a whole car note and insurance for me! This just has me upset, and there’s no reason to have an age gap if it’s for ALL American citizens…
