2020 SURJ National ‘Collect Our Cousins’ Electoral Action Program Commitment Form
President Trump - and his allies - cannot win at the ballot without selling a lie to white people.  SURJ Chapters are uniquely positioned to stop him in his tracks by making a commitment to disrupting those lies and winning back our people.  Can we count your chapter in?

In 2016, we saw thousands  of people pour into our chapters in response to Trumps’ election. People were clear that white voters handed Trump his election - and that we need to do the much-needed work of organizing in majority white communities. In 2020, SURJ will be supporting chapters that opt in across the country to move their people into action and ensure white voters don’t re-elect Trump. We know our people are hungry for meaningful ways to take action that talk about race with our people - and build something that can last beyond just one election cycle.

People of color-led electoral groups are already holding it down and doing the work. In both 2016 and 2018, thousands of these groups ran savvy and effective campaigns to support the crucial work of turning people of color out to vote. Yet the far right in this country has relied on organizing white voters since the beginning of our country’s history. Leaders of color have been asking and demanding that white people ‘collect our cousins’ - and to do the work of meaningfully organizing white conflicted and disaffected voters for racial justice and liberation- for decades. As a SURJ chapter leader, you have the opportunity to make a pivotal difference in this work.

If you’re ready to grow your SURJ chapter - not just in terms of membership - but also in terms of leadership and ultimately power - if you’re ready to move beyond self-reflection and into action - this is the right program for you and your team.

SURJ's top electoral goal is to defeat Trump by providing the margin of difference among white voters in key battleground states. We will do this through:

Building on the ground campaigns in Georgia in partnership with our partner New Georgia Project and Pennsylvania with in partnership with our partner Casa In Action. These  campaings will integrate sophisticated analytics, relational organizing including face-to-face conversations at the door in majority white communities and across social networks to reach and persuade conflicted whites and to mobilize anti-racist white voters
Mobilize thousands of anti-racist white voters in non-swing states to reach tens of thousands of white voters in GA and PA and other swing states through  texts, digital outreach and - when possible- travling to these states and knocking on doors - to get real about why it’s in their interest to defeat Trump and making sure folks who we persuade make it to vote on election day.

This form is for chapters who are committed to engaging your chapter members in the national electoral strategy.  Please fill out the form to the best of your knowledge.  If you haven't had a conversation with your chapter about this yet, please do so by April 1st.  Contact z@surjaction.org with any questions.
