AARP Deeply Concerned by CMS Rule Allowing States to Block Grant Medicaid Programs
Federal funding limits would put millions at risk to lose health coverage

WASHINGTON—AARP Senior Vice President for Government Affairs Bill Sweeney released the following statement in response to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidance for states on Medicaid block grants and cap funding:

“AARP is deeply concerned that new guidance released today by CMS letting states cap funding in the Medicaid program could put at risk the health coverage for millions of vulnerable Americans. Capping the program’s funding structure and limiting benefits and services could leave millions without the coverage and care they need.

“AARP has a long history of advocating for access to care through the Medicaid program. The program is a vital safety net and intergenerational lifeline for millions of individuals and their family caregivers. Over 72 million seniors, people with disabilities, and children and adults with limited incomes rely on Medicaid for critical health care and long-term services and supports.”
