Pennsylvania Election Results

Pennsylvania, won narrowly by President Trump in 2016, has taken center stage in the 2018 midterm elections. Mr. Trump campaigned in the state several times during the fall, hoping to motivate his base to turn out for Republican candidates.

But Lou Barletta, an early Trump supporter, lost to the Democratic incumbent, Bob Casey, in the race for United States Senate. And Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, was successfully re-elected, defeating Scott Wagner, a Republican former state senator who threatened to “stomp all over” Mr. Wolf’s face.

Democrats viewed the midterms as a chance to redeem themselves with Pennsylvania voters. A big reason is the state’s freshly redrawn district map, which was ordered by the state Supreme Court to undo a Republican gerrymander.

Brian Fitzpatrick, the Republican incumbent in this district in Philadelphia’s affluent northern suburbs, has retained his seat. The district has a moderate reputation, but its new boundaries include more Democratic territory. Mr. Fitzpatrick, a former F.B.I. agent, voted for the Republican tax overhaul but against repealing the Affordable Care Act, and was endorsed by the state A.F.L.-C.I.O. and the gun safety advocate Gabrielle Giffords. His Democratic opponent was Scott Wallace, a wealthy philanthropist who embraced progressive policies and argued that his personal wealth freed him from the influence of large donors.

The Republican incumbent, Mike Kelly, won a fifth term. The court-ordered redistricting that reunited Democratic-leaning Erie County in this district in the state’s northwestern corner was not enough to give Rob DiNicola, a lawyer and the Democratic challenger, a better chance than he would have had under the old map.
