A History of Activism and Leadership

Jumaane was elected New York City Public Advocate in 2019 on a platform of truly affordable, income targeted housing, anti-gun violence measures, fair policing, equity, and social justice issues. In the City Council, Jumaane passed nearly 70 bills to help build a more equitable, sustainable, and livable New York. He passed landmark legislation to curb the NYPD’s abuse of stop-and-frisk, championed strategies to reduce gun violence, advanced housing justice, and helped protect women’s reproductive rights.

Jumaane has quickly made his mark on the office of Public Advocate, restructuring the office to empower staff to prioritize community engagement, outreach, and service. He also passed more legislation in his first 2 years in office than any Public Advocate has in history, including key bills that protect New Yorkers in the workplace and those looking for work, shield struggling homeowners from undue tax burdens, promote public safety, and fight discrimination in our housing systems.

Now, Jumaane is running for Governor to bring transformational change to Albany.

About Jumaane

Jumaane is the only candidate by and for the working people of New York. An elected official, an advocate, a father, and a first-generation New Yorker of Caribbean heritage, Jumaane has spent his whole life fighting for New York’s families. A product of our public education system from pre-K through a graduate degree, someone who has faced health struggle and disability, and who has put his body on the line to fight racism and prejudice–Jumaane understands the challenges and perseverance of our communities.

Jumaane is committed to creating equal opportunity for every New Yorker. His campaign is powered by everyday people, not corporations and big real estate.
