DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A new Eviction Task Force announced by Dayton mayor Nan Whaley will study what’s driving evictions in Dayton, and decide on ways to reduce them.
“The eviction task force is not a rent-for-free kind of effort, at all. But there are systems in place and we’ve gotten stories that people have sent into us since we’ve announced this about things that really happened, that didn’t have to happen,” Whaley said. “Dayton is like 26th in the nation of most evictions. And so we want to look at our systems, see if there’s ways we can keep people in housing, longer.”
Whaley said evictions are a problem that affects even the youngest in Dayton communities. At Dayton Public Schools, Whaley said there are noticeable consequences.
“Forty-one per cent ended in a different school than they started in, mostly because they moved. A significant number of our children are in homeless shelters at some point during the year because their housing is taken away,” Whaley said. “When that happens to kids, they’re less likely to be focused. It affects absentee rates.”
