Participate in the County, State and National Conventions

Chair Jane Kleeb and the Nebraska Democratic Party — on April 7, 2020 — announced our revised rules and timelines for county and state conventions along with the application process to participate in county and state conventions.

The rules and process governing the county and state conventions were approved by both the NDP State Executive Committee and the Democratic National Committee.

The process for the county and state conventions changed due to the coronavirus and the need to keep everyone’s health and safety a top priority. The process for running as a National Delegate is outlined as well in this blog and the rules documents linked below.

Nebraska Democratic Party’s Delegate Selection Plan

National Delegate Process

The NDP will send 33 delegates to the national convention in Milwaukee.

Automatic delegates are NDP Chair Jane Kleeb, First Associate Chair Richard Register, National Committeeman Ron Kaminski, and National Committeewoman Patty Zieg.

An additional 29 national delegates will be selected/affirmed at the NDP State Convention, held on the phone, on June 13 and 14.

The NDP worked with partners across the state to create a process where every Nebraskan had a chance to be heard on the plan as we gear up for 2020. We held over 30 trainings across the state.

Any registered Democrat in Nebraska wishing to be elected as a delegate to the National Convention must first vote in the May 12, 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary as well as submit their form to declare their candidacy for National Delegate. The registration closed on May 26.

For the Congressional level delegate candidates, your name will be placed on the ballot to all delegates elected to attend the state convention. The At-Large delegates and the PLEO delegates will be elected/affirmed by voice vote/roll call vote on the state convention call and are subject to the new one-to-one rule (see the Delegate Selection Plan memo to the DNC).

County Conventions

All of the county conventions this year were held May 17-31 on a phone/video platform hosted by the NDP.

For those who registered for their county convention, the NDP emailed further information for their county convention.

The large counties — including Douglas, Hall, Lancaster and Sarpy — will hold their conventions on the phone but votes will happen via paper ballot before the convention gathers on the phone. After the NDP processes your registration, the ballot will be emailed to you.

All votes for small counties are conducted on the phone.
