Dr. Aleta Borrud has won the DFL endorsement to run for the State Senate in District 26 currently represented by GOP Sen. Carla Nelson.

Borrud, an 18-year medical professional, is running on expanding access to health care. She said the coronavirus pandemic illustrates how guaranteed coverage is not only important to individuals, but the community as a public health issue.

"We need a robust, coordinated healthcare delivery system affordable for everyone," Borrud said in a statement. "Due to the careful stewarding of our government resources following nine years of Democratic leadership, Minnesota is in a solid position to not only provide this, but also address people's current economic insecurity. No one should become homeless or go hungry in our state."

Borrud is also running on workers being able to earn a living wage, adequate funding for schools to ensure the success of every student, and housing security.

After her medical career focused on older hospitalized patients, Borrud became a community activist for healthcare assess. She also became an advocate for farmers and rural communities.
