The Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO's Union Summer is a paid $21 per hour summer internship for people interested in the Labor Movement. 2024 participants will spend an exciting six weeks, from June 24 - August 3, working full-time and hands-on with different campaigns to advance opportunities for working people. Union Summer is an intensive program and is comprised of 3 main components: education, actions, and on the job training. Union Summer is unique and powerful; it combines front-line labor-related work with grassroots organizing in ongoing campaigns by unions throughout the Greater Seattle area.
An example Union Summer week could look like this:
Tuesday: Attend a rally early in the morning to support striking workers and end the day registering people to vote at a local farmers' market.
Wednesday: Make phone calls to union members reminding them to turn in their ballot.
Thursday: Assist union staff with various responsibilities and attend a lobbying meeting with your supervisor and the mayor.
Friday: Education Day. Learn about the history of the labor and social justice movements in the Pacific Northwest, and tour historical buildings.
Saturday: Action Day. Knock on doors and talk to union members about local politics and elections.
Union Summer is fast paced, therefore Union Summer Interns are expected to be flexible, as the nature of campaigns can change daily. Union Summer Interns are contributing to a movement of working people with diverse backgrounds, all doing the work to build stronger unions. Apply by Friday, May 17th if you are ready to join us.
