The Baltimore City school community has been among the hardest hit by the health and economic impacts of COVID-19 in Maryland and the nation.

Our district did not get the support we needed to transition to distance learning. Our teachers and parents suffered from hasty decisions and unclear directives without adequate equipment or training for digital school. Baltimore’s students disproportionately suffered from learning loss as a result.

Now, as the number of new cases surges across the country and continues to rise in Maryland, our city faces greater risk than we did in March when we first closed physical school buildings. Already, many of us have had to watch family and friends suffer from the virus, some of whom we’ll never get back.

Despite the challenges we faced with digital learning, it would be even worse to take part in a learning environment that puts us in harm’s way.
