If completed, the Line 3 pipeline will transport 1 million barrels of tar sands oil per day -- the emissions equivalent of 50 new coal-fired plants. In addition to destroying Canadian boreal forests, it endangers Anishinaabe and other tribal wetlands and rice fields, as well as the headwaters of the Mississippi. With 22 river crossings, there is a great risk of spills and leaks.
Indigenous leaders in Minnesota have been fighting this for months, but they can’t do it alone. This is an environmental issue, an economic issue, and a human rights issue, and XR is committed to doing all we can to help. We can tell fossil fuel companies and the banks that fund them that we have had enough. We can tell indigenous activists that we hear them, and that we want to help.
In a blatant attempt at “greenwashing,” major banks have lent Enbridge $800 million in “Sustainability Loans,” and have millions more in loans waiting to be renewed. We’re going to do everything we can to get those banks to walk away from these toxic loans. In the coming weeks, XR activists from all over the country will be traveling to Minnesota to lend their voices and their bodies to the cause. Those of us watching from afar can still make a difference, with donations and virtual actions. The clock is ticking -- the time to act is now.
Join us this month as we take action in NYC to protest the construction of this pipeline and demand the banks stop funding this toxic project. Sign up for details on upcoming actions and events!
