AUWU response to forecast 13% unemployment
The prime minister must end his cruel and heartless plan to condemn two million people to poverty
The Australian Unemployed Workers Union was devastated by the prime minister's announcement today forecasting a dramatic rise in unemployment. We expect that more than two million people will be reliant on Centrelink payments at the end of the year.
A predicted 13 per cent effective unemployment rate again demonstrates the need for the government to urgently confirm a full suspension of ‘mutual’ obligations and guarantee income support payments above the poverty line.
Failing to do so will seal the prime minister’s legacy as one of cruelty and heartlessness.
Our lives were bad enough before this crisis. The system will crumble if the prime minister continues his commitment to consign us to deep poverty and punishing activities that help no one.
