Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is applauding his counterpart in New York, who Thursday filed a lawsuit with the goal of dismantling the National Rifle Association.

The lawsuit, filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleges leadership of the powerful gun lobby have diverted millions of dollars in donations toward personal use.

"In taking on the NRA, my colleague Attorney General James is fearlessly using those powers to hold them accountable for serious misdeeds and abuses," Ellison said. "She's showing that no organization, no matter how politically powerful, is above the law. I congratulate her for it."

The president of the NRA calls the lawsuit baseless, and a transparent attempt to score political points in an election season.
