Why this petition matters

Residents who live either in the surrounding nearby area of Crane Ledge Woods on the Hyde Park border with eastern Roslindale or in the greater Boston area, strongly support the future purchase and protection of the 24-acre Crane Ledge woodlands by the Boston Parks Department to be used as an urban wild and/or park in an environmental justice area with almost no parks within walking distance.

It provides a place of stress-relieving tranquility and beauty, and is a wildlife sanctuary. The mature tree canopy absorbs carbon pollutants and protects our surrounding neighborhoods from severe flooding and excessive heat (which exacerbates respiratory illnesses like asthma). In fact, tree canopy cover over 40% has the largest cooling affect for a surrounding area by reducing temperatures by nearly 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Crane Ledge Woods has a 48% tree canopy cover and has been cooling our community for many years.

Crane Ledge Woods is unique and irreplaceable in its existing natural condition, and the Crane Ledge Woods Coalition is fighting hard to save it. Will you join us?

The woods (~14 acres of it) are under immediate threat of clearcutting by development - to be replaced by 10 buildings.

Last year Hyde Park was the only Boston neighborhood to lose tree canopy in every land use category.  Please help us send the urgent message to the land owner and the City of Boston that this land is a remarkable natural asset that has numerous physical and mental health, ecological and financial benefits. Help us ensure the City of Boston fulfills its commitment to just and equitable access to greenspace for all of its residents, especially those in environmental justice areas of the City where the majority of the population are Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). Stand with us to SAVE the largest remaining forest in an environmental justice part of the city!
