Volunteer Spotlight: Chiara Anfuso

How did you get involved with anti-war activism and World BEYOND War (WBW)?
I got to know WBW after translating a few documents for the organization through Translators Without Borders. Issues of peace and security and human rights are my main areas of interest. I therefore got deeply interested in getting involved with WBW and helping with its mission.

What kinds of volunteer activities do you help with?
I am a member of the Events Team. I help in growing the organization’s events listings to make it the go-to hub for global anti-war/pro-peace events and assist with posting the events to the website. Hopefully, I will now also be able to help in a new amazing project for creating a WBW Youth Network (details to be announced soon!).

What’s your top recommendation for someone who wants to get involved with WBW?
Just get in touch with the WBW team to see if there are any opportunities available and don’t be scared to give a try. I think there are no other recommendations needed; everyone interested in advocating for change, willing to be committed and help with the mission of the organization will be more than welcome. There’s an amazing team to have a chance to work with and you will also learn a lot.

What keeps you inspired to advocate for change?
During university I have understood how horrible and devastating nuclear weapons and war in general are. I remember that during a lecture I got overwhelmed when I saw how huge the radius of nukes can be and when I realized that the repercussions can result in it being much worse. Promoting disarmament and a peaceful world is in my opinion the most rationalist and “human” thing to do. COVID-19 has demonstrated to us all that new challenges can always arise and that these may be really hard to control. Promoting peace and cooperation is essential for defeating a crisis like this.

How has the coronavirus pandemic impacted your activism?
I was a bit disappointed in the beginning. However, looking at the whole situation now, I think that the pandemic has helped in fostering my activism. As I am in my final year at university, I can’t leave The Netherlands, but by working remotely, I could easily join the global World BEYOND War team and manage my time efficiently. I cannot find a better way for spending my spare time.
