TWU Local 234 Members Vote to Ratify
New One-Year Contract with SEPTA
PHILADELPHIA – On Friday, the members of Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 234, SEPTA’s largest union, voted to ratify new contracts with the transit agency. The City, Frontier and Red Arrow bargaining units each voted to ratify their agreements. Voting took place throughout the day and into the evening by secret ballot at worksites and bus depots across the city. The agreements include across-the-board wage increases of seven percent and a $3,000 bonus for each TWU-represented employee. Along with wage gains and bonuses, the new contract provides an increase in the pension for those that retire in the next year and a doubling of a long-neglected disability pension benefit. The SEPTA board has scheduled a ratification vote for Thursday, November 16. The contracts expire in November 2024.
During the contract talks, which began in July and concluded on October 27, the parties also agreed to a number of work issues designed to limit forced overtime, improve attendance, increase opportunities for time off the job, and training for union members to maintain SEPTA’s new zero emission bus fleet.
“This was a good agreement for our members. It will put more money in our member’s pockets during a time of high inflation and help SEPTA with recruitment and retention,” said TWU Local 234 President Brian Pollitt. “But I want to emphasize that it is very much a work in progress. It is only a one-year agreement. Much work remains, especially as it relates to compensation, safety and security issues.”
TWU 234 represents more than 5,000 workers. The union is an affiliate of Transport Workers Union of America and the AFL-CIO.
