Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have given no sign yet that they’re ready to directly engage in negotiations on a Covid-19 relief package, though deteriorating economic data may put pressure for them to engage.

With just over a week to go before a deal likely needs to be done, a report Thursday showed an unexpected surge in weekly jobless claims, to the highest level in almost two months. A Friday reading on consumer sentiment is forecast to show a decline this month.
