I applaud Gov. Mills for her bipartisan leadership. In her State of the State address, Mills proposed giving back half of Maine’s budgetary surplus to everyday Mainers. She intends to issue checks for $500 to about 800,000 taxpayers.
Mills’ excellent plan originated with Maine Republican leadership and demonstrates that she listens to helpful ideas from Republicans and Democrats alike.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the same can be said of her predecessor, Paul LePage. I believe that when LePage was in office he seemed proudly stubborn and engaged in harsh, partisan rhetoric.
With LePage attempting to return to politics, I’m reminded there is a clear contrast between Mills reaching across the aisle and LePage sowing division.
