New laws have increased voting barriers such as limited access to mail, limited or distant polling and voter registration locations, limited broadband access, and language accessibility. We should all have access – regardless of race or gender – to make our voices heard and cast our vote. Urge your Senators to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (S.4) without delay!

Help Shamar Rebuild After BLM Arrest
Twenty-year-old Shamar Betts has been indicted for a federal offense of inciting a riot since June 5th, 2020, due to a post on Facebook regarding the death of George Floyd. He awaits sentencing on a federal hold, so he cannot be released on bond, because he has been labeled a “domestic terrorist” by President Trump, and a “threat to the community” by the prosecutors.
Left with the option of a plea deal, he should be released on probation around June 2021, but he will be forced to pay restitution fines of up to $10,000. He has to start off fresh because he lost his jobs working with the Boys and Girls Club and the Urbana Park District due to the arrest, as well as his apartment. The apartment was on an ongoing lease and he owes $12,000 to the leasing company.
Shamar has worked hard the last couple of years building a name for himself in the community as a positive Black role model for kids. He’s never been arrested before, and now after his first arrest the government has tried to tarnish his name because he expressed his feelings on the injustice Black people go through. He is in need of help for this change to his life.
-----
The above are Shamar’s own words. I have worked closely with Shamar in the past, and since he continues to be held in custody with his trial having been delayed for many months, I am creating this fundraiser on his behalf with his full knowledge and input. I will collect the funds, which will be transferred to him as soon as he has means to receive them.
If you'd like to read more about how Shamar's case fits into the wider, newly emerging pattern of charging those associated with protests with federal crimes, he was interviewed for The Intercept here: https://theintercept.com/2020/10/30/federal-prosecutors-protests-pretrial-detention/
