Today we returned to the White House for the third day of the People vs. Fossil Fuels mobilization and, for the first time this week, I was arrested (briefly) under a giant banner that read “Biden: Our Communities Can’t Wait.” Today’s action, like all our actions this week, were led by indigenous leaders (mostly from the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas today), and aimed at pressuring President Biden to declare a climate emergency and stop all new fossil fuel projects.
I was one of around 90 people who sat in at the White House fence today, and one of nearly 300 people have been arrested so far this week at the White House to pressure President Biden to take aggressive climate action and halt fossil fuel projects. Despite a ton of powerful testimony and some amazing press coverage in CBS, MSNBC, the Washington Post and more, President Biden has so far avoided questions and refused to comment on the mass civil disobedience or respond to our demands. Many of our speakers today came from communities like Cancer Alley in Louisiana or Native communities, that the administration has promised to defend. But our communities remain threatened by fossil fuel projects, including pending projects like Line 3, Line 5 and more that Biden could reject right now.
That’s why we say that Biden is breaking his promises, and failing to live up to his goal of being a climate leader.
Today’s actions were designed to draw attention to the heatwaves, floods, fires, hurricanes, and other fossil fueled climate disasters that are threatening our communities, and the urgent need to stop fossil fuel production in order to save lives. That’s why we invited speakers from Alaska, Louisiana, California, North Carolina, Texas, and beyond to give testimony and call on Biden to act now.
