The government has been criticised again over its plans for free school meals. Schools have been told not to provide free school meal vouchers or lunches to disadvantaged children during half term, because councils have been given money to help families.

However, teachers say that children could go hungry because of “confusion and chaos” and head teachers criticised the “constantly changing” schemes.

Yesterday the government reversed its recommendation that schools deliver parcels rather than vouchers after a fall-out over substandard lunches sent to families by private companies. These were paid £15 per child per week, but in some cases sent little more than a loaf of bread, a few pieces of vegetable and fruit and some cheese slices.
