Reader's View: Stauber, GOP need to embrace truth

Truth like the Duluth lynching.

Small wonder that U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber rails against critical race theory, which, in essence, is simply telling the truth about our history (“Stauber tweets out against critical race theory,” June 29).

Truth like the Duluth lynching. Truth like what we did to the indigenous people. Truth like the Tulsa race massacre. Truth like Jim Crow laws and racial discrimination in nearly every government program from agriculture to housing. We need to acknowledge these facts, and our children need to be taught that their ancestors, perhaps including their parents and grandparents, were not perfect. The so-called "greatest generation" was not so great when it came to equal rights for people of color and women.

Stauber and the Republicans can't even bear the truth of the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Why would we expect them to embrace the truth about systemic racism in U.S. history?

Republicans have embraced fantasy and ignorance.
