Iowa GOP proposes amendment to reduce dispersal of mail-in absentee ballots
Legislative Republicans proposed an election law amendment that would stop the dispersal of mail-in absentee ballots by the Secretary of State.
Absentee voting during the June 2 primary election led to record voter turnout.
The amendment proposed by Republicans would prevent the Secretary of State from sending mail-in ballots to all registered Iowans in the future.
Those in favor of the amendment said it would make voting secure, but Democrats call the measure voter suppression.
“Voters still have to request a ballot,” Polk County Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald said. “You’re not given a ballot automatically. You have to request that ballot, and all this is doing is making it easier during a pandemic, to have the postage paid into your local county auditor, but it doesn't sound like (Republican lawmakers) want that to happen.”
The Iowa Association of County Auditors opposes the bill.
Iowans can request an absentee ballot for November's general election starting July 6.
