Gov. Mills featured in campaign sharing stories from domestic abuse survivors
Gov. Janet Mills is being featured as part of a campaign against domestic abuse in the state.
Mills is taking part in the Finding Our Voices campaign, which uses bookmarks and banners to tell the stories of domestic violence survivors.
Mills escaped an abusive relationship in which her life was threatened when she was younger.
Posters featuring Mills and other survivors were placed in Augusta, Hallowell and Gardiner on Friday.
The governor's poster reads, "Domestic abuse affects everyone. Years ago, a man I loved threatened my life. Escape from violence is possible."
"So this is really reframing it to let everyone know that yes, it does happen to strong, successful, dynamic women. It happens to everyone. There's no shame for the victim at all. It's misplaced shame," Finding Our Voices founder Patrisha McLean said.
McLean said survivors ranging in age from 18 to 80 are taking part in the campaign.
