Kamala Harris Makes History as the First Woman Elected Vice President

January 20, 2021 – New York, NY –  Today marks a turning point for our country, with the swearing in of Joseph Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice President. Kamala Harris became the nation’s first Black and South Asian woman Vice President in history and Joe Biden took over the mantle of the presidency with the clear intent to restore dignity and truth to our country’s highest office and deliver on substantive plans to address the multiple crises we face.

After a tumultuous four years, NOW-NY looks forward to a brighter feminist future, one that focuses on justice for everyone. “We are energized to continue finding solutions for women and families — from access to abortion, affordable healthcare, and quality childcare to securing living wages and fair pay to ending violence and discrimination,” said Sonia Ossorio, president of the National Organization for Women of New York. “This is the work the National Organization for Women has been doing for more than fifty years, and we look forward to working with the Biden/Harris administration to accomplish so much for women and their families.”

Trump’s presidency will represent a dark period in American history which culminated in the undermining of our electoral process, leading to a violent attack on the nation’s Capitol during the certification of the 2020 election results. Former President, Donald Trump, led the false charges of a fraudulent and “stolen” election, leaving millions of Americans angry and distrustful of our government and believing the system is rigged.

“History is riddled with countries that have fallen into chaos and lawlessness when unchecked power is allowed to reign,” Ossorio said. “ Donald Trump undermined the pillars of democracy, by stoking racial divisions, lying to the American people and creating distrust in our government. As a country and as a people we were tested, yet truth, dignity and fairness won.”

NOW-NYC ignites change for the women and girls of New York. We advance laws, promote women in politics, fight for reproductive justice, challenge discrimination and violence against women, and act NOW.
