Help us redesign the Guild’s logo

Updated 6 p.m. April 30

We’ve seen so many impressive logos from our locals and our units over the past several years, and now we’d like to redesign the international union logo.

We’re asking for members to pitch themselves to be hired (and paid!) to design a new logo for The NewsGuild. We had originally structured this as a contest, but on further reflection and some really good feedback, we’re adjusting to make sure the designer is compensated fairly. (My intent was to make sure this was a completely member-driven effort. As a designer myself, I should have known better and for that, I apologize).

First, a bit of history. Before we were called “The NewsGuild” we were called The Newspaper Guild and the American Newspaper Guild. This is how our logo has changed over the years. Read more Guild history here.

We’re asking for NewsGuild-CWA members (either new or in good standing) to pitch a design to us. You can submit an idea, a sketch or a portfolio. We’ll then select a designer to commission a new logo and pay them for their time.

This is what we’re looking for:

  • You must be a NewsGuild-CWA member (new or in good standing)
  • We’d ultimately like two versions of the logo. One without text and one with text.
  • The text should include “The NewsGuild” and “CWA” or “Communications Workers of America”
  • Must have some red, referencing our parent union, the Communications Workers of America (See Why We Wear Red on Thursdays)

Submit your pitch/idea/portfolio by May 31, 2021 to be eligible. The Executive Council will review the submissions, reach out with any questions we might have, and select a designer by June 30, 2021.

Submit yourself for hire here. (Google account required)
