Senate candidate claims he teaches at Kean University, but school says he doesn’t

Jason Krychiw unable to show any evidence to dispute college’s claim that he doesn’t work there

Jason Krychiw touts his work as a college level science lecturer in his Democratic primary campaign against State Sen. Joseph Cryan (D-Union), but his supposed employer says he doesn’t work there.

Krychiw told the New Jersey Globe on Wednesday that he teaches a “Principles of Microbiology” class at Kean University two mornings a week, but that doesn’t appear to be true.

University records indicate that it’s been nearly four years since Krychiw worked or taught at Kean.

They say he initially worked as an adjunct professor and was a lecturer for the first half of 2017.  Kean University has no record of his employment since then.

A personal financial disclosure filed by Krychiw with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission this month shows zero income from any source for all of last year.

Krychiw told the NJ Globe that he taught at Kean in 2019 but not in 2020.

“They didn’t renew my contract,” he explained  “I was pretty much unemployed all of that year.”

But in two telephone interviews, Krychiw claimed to have been rehired and insisted that he teaches at Kean every Monday and Wednesday from 8:10-9:45 AM.

“I’m currently teaching there,” he said.

Finding evidence of his employment has been futile.

The Kean University website does not list him as an instructor.  An email address Krychiw gave the NJ Globe didn’t work.  It bounced back as undeliverable.

Krychiw was unable to produce any documentation of his employment at Kean.  His attempt to provide a paystub or direct deposit receipt showing that he’s being paid for teaching the microbiology class was unsuccessful.

Still, his campaign materials highlight his employment at Kean University.

From Krychiw’s campaign website: “He’s a lecturer at Kean University, teaching hundreds of students about science and biology every day.”

Also on Wednesday, Krychiw said he taught at Union County College.

A spokesperson, Jaime Segal, said he “is not employed by the college.”
