During a telephone town hall Monday, Republican Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson questioned the effectiveness of masks despite research from public health officials, scientists and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying they have reduced the spread of COVID-19.Continuing Coverage: Coronavirus in Wisconsin"As more evidence comes in, it's becoming harder and harder to support that masks actually work," Johnson said. "If they would have worked, we probably wouldn't have had as many infections, as many deaths as we did. But be that as it may, I was just on a flight and I wore a mask an entire time, OK? So I'm not opposed to masks. I just think we should take a look at that."The comments come as Johnson faced criticism from those like Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House's chief medical advisor, after questioning "the big push to make sure everyone gets a vaccine.""It doesn't make any sense," Fauci said on ABC's This Week Sunday. "The more people you get vaccinated, the more people you protect."While acknowledging the vaccine's effectiveness Monday, Johnson said he would fight any effort to require or prove vaccination. "I don't downplay this," Johnson said. "I know people who have suffered seriously from COVID. I'm not downplaying this at all.
