Direct payments to Pennsylvanians. A citizens group is pushing for checks to help offset rising costs.

“We are here today to call on the General Assembly to use American Rescue Plan funds,” said Nick Pressley with We the People PA.

In the halls of the Capitol today, We the People PA is requesting the legislature use over $3 billion in Rescue Plan money to fund direct aid to people and small businesses.

In the plan, every car or light truck owner would receive a $250 payment from the state. The cost would run about $1.8 billion. Another $1.4 billion would go towards property tax rebates, the PA Opportunity Program and Covid relief for small businesses.

“It's time to help families and businesses afford the higher cost of food, housing, childcare and gas,” Pressley said.

Some of the ideas mirror a plan supported by Governor Tom Wolf that was released last month.

Right now, the General Assembly has not moved the idea forward.
