Leaders and members of Chicago-area unions are announcing their shared commitment to free and fair elections and a peaceful transition of power. They'll issue a joint statement that also commits their unions to taking the necessary, non-violent steps to defend every vote. The press conference is taking place at the Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph, near the Chicago Board of Elections' central registration and voting site. Participating unions include SEIU Local 73, SEIU Healthcare Illinois Indiana Missouri and Kansas, United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), AFGE Local 704, Cook County College Teachers Union Local 1600, the Chicago Teachers Union, and the Warehouse Worker Organizing Committee. The coalition of unions issuing the statement represents a broad multi-racial base of essential workers whose voices and votes are vital and must be counted for there to be a free and fair election. Unions and grassroots groups are also planning to mobilize on Wednesday at 5PM at Daley Plaza, for a rally to defend democracy and the vote. Sponsoring groups are demanding that every vote is counted and reflected in the government sworn in on January 20.
