2021 Capacity Building Event Planner Summer Associate

HOPE Fair Housing Center works to create greater housing opportunities for all and ensure that everyone has the chance to live in the home of their choice free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, familial status, or any other characteristics protected under state or local laws. HOPE accomplishes this through education, outreach, enforcement, training, and advocacy. Being a small non-profit organization, HOPE does not have the resources to hire a development-focused staff member, and many of the duties that typically fall under this position are delegated amongst staff. The VISTA would be responsible for creating an action-plan that staff can easily implement when undertaking event planning projects. Ideal outcomes at the end of the VISTA’s term include the creation and implementation best practices in event planning and execution with at least four HOPE staff members trained to continue these best practices after the VISTA has left. The VISTA will also plan and execute an event for HOPE in the month of July, in coordination with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, with the help of staff and the site supervisor, and create a resource list and useful notes for future event planning that the staff can reference. The VISTA will also work with the site supervisor to organize event files in HOPE’s internal computer system to be maintained for later reference and use. Strong organizational capabilities, attention to detail, and event planning experience is preferred in candidates. This position is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website.
