CUNY establishes a School dedicated to Public Service and Social Justice

A CUNY alumna who worked at universities in Michigan and Boston before returning to NYC, SLU’s new “mini-provost” reflects on her journey as an academic leader. Associate Dean Edozie outlines her vision for advancing curricula, experiential education, and student success. Working at the Amazon warehouse on Staten Island and joining the effort for a new labor union there led Rina D. Cummings to pursue a B.A. in Labor Studies at SLU. Rina is excited to finally obtain her college degree and go on to work that helps others. She has a personal connection to advocacy, as someone with low vision who herself needs help navigating life and school. She feels valued at SLU and eagerly anticipates her classes. Read more.

The 2025 edition of The State of the Unions report is now available. Published annually by CUNY SLU faculty, the report provides an in-depth profile of organized labor in New York City, New York State, and the nation. It continues a long tradition of documenting key trends in union membership and offering a valuable resource for scholars, policymakers, and the public. Read more.

The CUNY SLU and the 21st Century ILGWU Heritage Fund have launched the Jay Mazur ILGWU Memorial Scholarship, honoring the legendary labor leader who championed workers’, immigrants’, and women’s rights for over 70 years. A proud Bronx native and CUNY alum, Mazur led the ILGWU and UNITE with compassion and vision. His legacy continues through this scholarship supporting future labor leaders. Read more.
