New York State Grade 3-8 Testing

2024 ELA testing takes place Thursday April 11–Friday April 12
2024 Math testing takes place Tuesday May 7–Wednesday May 8

Note: The above dates are for students taking the test on paper. (Schools choose any two consecutive days in the testing window.) Some schools will administer the tests via computer; those schools have a longer testing window to choose from.

Your Rights Parents and guardians of 3rd-8th graders in New York State have the right to refuse to allow their children to participate in this testing with no adverse consequences to their child, their child’s teachers, or their child’s school.

How to Opt Out Send an email or a letter to the principal of your child’s school letting them know that you refuse to allow your child to participate in the NYS testing in ELA and math.

Spread the Word! Many New Yorkers don’t know that they have the right to opt out of the tests. Share this information (in English and Spanish) with friends, neighbors, and your school community.
